**U.S. Postal Service issued a sheet of 10 old-fashioned flower stamps that are reproductions from vintage seed packets.

Two flowers depicted on the stamps can be considered cold-hardy annuals: calendulas and alyssum. They are happy this time of year with cool weather but resent the heat and quickly go to seed when the weather warms.
Calendula were once used as a saffron substitute. Saffron is the filament harvested from a particular kind of crocus, a labor-intensive business that makes saffron a precious commodity. Calendaula petals could impart the same color, but not the flavor.
Sweet alyssum (бурачок ? по нашему) grows to only a few inches and coats itself in a cloud of tiny white flowers. These too are fragrant, the scent reminiscent of honey. It is a good plant for spilling over the edge of rocks or paving.
